Our Process

Our farming philosophy is rooted in environmental compatibility. We’ve showcased pen heifers in Denver at the National Western Stock Show and Oklahoma City at the Cattlemen’s Congress. Each time, we’ve been fortunate to feature Champion Pens of purebred or percentage heifers.

A comprehensive approach is crucial to our operation. We meticulously document the weights of all calves at birth and weaning, following which they are vaccinated, wormed, and poured. A similar procedure is followed for all cows, along with collecting weights and body scores during calf weaning. Yearling weights, REA and IMF scans, and booster vaccinations are standard for all keeping heifers and bull calves.

Our heifers and yearling bulls graze on wheat pasture, with access to free-choice wheat hay. They are also hand-fed a small supplement to prevent bloat. Our aim is to grow, not fatten, our cattle. For the past six years, we have retained full ownership of the bottom end of our steers and heifers, feeding them out at the feedyard and selling them on a grid. This allows us to gather individual data on every carcass.

Our Story

1986

1987

Monte’s father sought to produce solid-colored calves from his crossbred herd of Simmental and Beefmaster cows. His solution was to acquire a red Salers bull. The result? Calves that not only arrived easily, but also exhibited impressive growth rates.

“When my wife and I, then residing in an apartment in town, made the pivotal decision to purchase the farm where we currently reside in Ninnekah, Oklahoma. During this period, my wife was a schoolteacher, and I was employed in town. To make full use of the farm’s ample grass, I purchased a few commercial cows and a yearling Salers bull from Nebraska.”

1991

The need for more cows led me to the Val-Leo dispersal sale, where I initially intended to purchase 12 bred females. However, impressed by the quality of the cattle, I ended up buying 28 bred cows. The spring of 1992 marked the arrival of a 100% calf crop from these cows. Their gentle temperament, ease of handling, and exceptional maternal instincts were a revelation.

Consequently, I retained some of the top-end heifers for replacements, as well as a few bulls to sell as yearlings. Observing the thriving calves on our farm, our neighbors unfamiliar with Salers cattle, were motivated to experiment with them.

2013

Following the passing of my father, I took over the management of my mother’s herd of 65 cows, in addition to my own. At 82 years young, my mother’s herd comprises of high percentage Salers cattle, known for their low-maintenance and problem-free characteristics. The bulls she uses are those no sold by June 1st. We are selective about the bulls we offer for sale, keeping only those that pass our stringent quality tests. Any bull that isn’t up to our standards is castrated, ensuring that our customers have access to the same top-quality genetics that we rely on for our herd.
